Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Mercy and grace are often considered the same. But there is a difference. Grace is receiving something you didn’t deserve or earn. Mercy is not getting what you deserve. We all want mercy. We really do not want what we actually deserve for our sins from God. For we are all sinners and fall short of His will. We often deny mercy in word or deed because we feel those who have hurt us deserve to be punished. What if we only received mercy from God as we offered mercy to those who have offended us? I think we’d be in over our heads. Mercy becomes the first step in forgiveness. Because of grace and God’s love for us, mercy flowed from Calvary. Jesus took what we deserved and had mercy on all of us. Mercy delivered by a loving Father and a willing Son so that we might be redeemed and worthy. Yes, someone in our lives has hurt us. They’ve done us wrong. They don’t deserve our mercy. Do we deserve God’s mercy? No, but He offers it to us day in and day out. Praying this day we become more Christ like with mercy.
